Hospitality Bathrooms Go Green In 2013

September 26, 2013 By Don Eberly 4 Comments

When travelers look for lodging while on a trip, they want their room to be a retreat for relaxation. Some consumers prefer a country-style bed and breakfast while others gravitate towards contemporary designs. One feature that not many will argue about is green sustainability.

Hotels are embracing eco-friendly products to decrease impact on the earth and reduce operation bills, while maintaining comfortable luxury for guests. How are they doing this? By targeting the space where the most waste takes place – the bathroom. Below, we highlight five sustainable products that have caught our attention for hotel and resort bathroom spaces.

The Organic 2 Handle Single-Hole Faucet

Starck Organic 2 Handle
Single-Hole Faucet

Designed by Philippe Starck, this faucet contains a third less brass than traditional fixtures. The handle at the top controls water temperature with an adjustable temperature restriction, and the distinctive rotating spout controls volume, creating an easier method of controlling water flow.

The Versacork Series

Sustainable Flooring Versacork Premium™

The Sustainable Flooring Company strives to provide flooring, wall, and millwork options of high quality, while maintaining its personal commitment to not adversely impact the environment for company benefit. All of the company’s products are made from reclaimed or recycled wood, bamboo or cork. In addition, various combinations of the three materials can be used to create the best possible match for clients’ needs. The Versacork Premium™ series is a suitable application for showers, pool surrounds, back splashes, and bar tops, while offering remarkable slip-resistance when wet or dry. It is soft to the touch and absorbs body heat for a warm floor.

Vetrazzo® Recycled Glass Countertops

Vetrazzo® Countertop in ‘Chivalry Blue’

The variety of color options Vetrazzo® provides is simply astounding. The countertops are comprised of 100% recycled glass, including architectural or art glass, beer bottles and jars. The end result creates a unique look and feel for the hotel’s style. Once a Vetrazzo® countertop is installed, it truly becomes a functional work of art within the bathroom.

Algiers Vanity Light

AFX Algiers Vanity Light

AFX has re-innovated the decorative light fixture category by using the latest LED technology with fluorescent lamping, modern ballasts and top-quality design engineering. The versatile Algiers Vanity features a contemporary design with metal end covers and satin nickel finish. Moreover, it can be mounted vertically or horizontally to the wall or ceiling.

American Standard Tropic Showerhead

American Standard Tropic Showerhead

Hotels, resorts, and other businesses or facilities can potentially save thousands of dollars annually by making an investment in low-flow bathroom appliances. As an example, New York’s LaGuardia Airport saved over $160,000 in one year, after spending $90,000 to convert its restrooms. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has a full list of products that adhere to the WaterSense® conservation standards. One manufacturer leading the effort is American Standard. The company has a number of products listed, including the Tropic showerhead. Tropic uses 1.5 gallons per minute, compared to the standard flow of 2.2 gallons per minute, without sacrificing performance.

Each of these companies has various eco-friendly products that will fit into any style of bathroom. Joining the sustainable hospitality industry is not only a profitable economic decision, but also a wise environmental decision.

The New Business of Agribusiness, Part II: Skylight Farm on Tending the Land and Community

September 18, 2013 By Don Eberly Leave a Comment

Last week, friends and followers of Eberly & Collard Public Relations were introduced to Justin Aiello and Skylight Farm. Our team was given the opportunity to share Skylight Farm’s integrative and relational marketing methodology, which has propelled Aiello into the spotlight as an innovative, new face for organic agribusiness. This week, our team is excited to delve more deeply into the in’s-and-out’s of organic growing and how Skylight Farm’s unique practices affect the Georgia growing community.

Why farm? Justin Aiello, the young owner and operator of Skylight Farm, could provide a long list of reasons why he chose to quit his previous job and pursue farming, but they all point to caring for the land and his community. The 27-year-old farmer, motivated by a desire to contribute to the local, sustainable food-culture in Atlanta, has spent the past year learning and researching the effects of farming on the local environment. His comprehensive study of biointensive growing methods, as well as the opportunity to be schooled in southern growing culture by seasoned veterans, has provided the farmer with a unique outlook on agribusiness. Skylight Farm is a blending of old methods and new practices with an innovative and fresh outlook on agribusiness.

Aiello’s growing methods range from those that have been passed down through generations of Georgia farmers, to the employment of the most modern agricultural technology. Everything done on the farm is put to practice with great care and sustainability in mind. Skylight Farm employs a number of different growing methods that enable Aiello to produce as much as possible, while caring for the land in the best way possible.

From SPIN, or small plot intensive farming, to conservation tillage methods, Aiello’s approach to growing is both pioneering and conscientious. Skylight Farm does intensive crop rotations and cover cropping, to keep the soil nutrient-rich as well as helping to prevent pest and disease problems. The farm also composts, harnesses integrative pest management practices and as Aiello emphasizes, makes use of “good, old-fashioned hard work.”

Since Skylight Farm sits on only a few acres, the farmer has embraced one growing method in particular, SPIN farming. Aiello explains, “SPIN farming allows you to grow very productively on a small space, only a few acres. In order to achieve the highest variety and most production out of a small space, you must plant smaller sections of crops and plant more often.” This means that a field could produce as many as 15 different crops at any given time. So, Skylight Farm plants row-by-row, alternating the rows in which different crops will be grown. Aiello illustrates that a 100 foot row of carrots might be completely harvested over the course of two weeks, so he plants a new bed of carrots, in a different place, every two weeks. He elaborates on the benefits of this method, sharing that, “SPIN farming allows us to have a steady supply of vegetables while maintaining a high variety in our crop rotation as well as making sure we don’t over-use the soil with just one crop.” The farm currently serves as a model for this method of farming and Aiello hopes to educate future growers on the environmental benefits to be found in this approach to production.

With education and preservation in mind, Skylight Farm utilizes integrative marketing to develop relationship with its local community in the hopes of sharing its engaging and unique approach to agribusiness. Those who interact with the farm, whether it’s digitally or at the Piedmont Park Green Market, learn something new about farming with each interaction. When Aiello shares photos documenting the step-by-step process of growing kale or posts an article about food seasonality, Skylight Farm bridges a gap in the connection between producers and community. Each time a customer asks Aiello about his business at the farmers market and he shares tidbits about organic farming, the purpose of Skylight Farm comes full circle.

As ECPR seeks to connect consumers with what they are consuming, our team gets excited about sharing innovative businesses, like Skylight Farm, who are creating fresh connections. In tending the land, Justin Aiello and Skylight Farm are investing in the health of Atlanta. As Aiello emphasizes, “Building relationships with a farm is not only a way to support your local economy, but also a way to support sustainable, healthy living. Know your farmer, know your food.”

To get to know Skylight Farm, click the link to visit their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/skylightfarmGA

You can also visit with Justin and the rest of the Skylight Farm team or pick up some veggies at the Piedmont Park Green Market every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Click the link for more information: http://ow.ly/oHSDM

It’s That Time of Year Again…

January 4, 2013 By Don Eberly 4 Comments

As we steam roll into 2013, many of us map out personal New Year’s resolutions to improve quality of life and happiness. Whether your goal is to travel to a worldly destination or learn a new craft, New Year’s resolutions are made to be accomplished. The same can be true for businesses that set realistic resolutions to achieve during the fiscal year.

At ECPR, we too have strategically brainstormed company goals and objectives for 2013. One of which is to establish and enhance relationships with our traditional advertising, marketing, public relations, and branding counterparts. During 2013, we also plan to connect with and learn more about various trade and consumer publications and editors on deeper levels, in addition to staying abreast of the latest online media resources.

If you are in the process of conceptualizing New Year’s resolutions for your business, our team has come up with a few ideas to help rejuvenate your company’s marketing plan for 2013.

  • Allocate ample time and funds to your company’s social media channels. Interacting with your customers through Facebook, blogs, Twitter, and Pinterest is a great way to establish customer loyalty and relationships, which in turn can result in increased product or service sales. Be sure to post meaningful and relative content on a consistent basis that will keep your fans (and customers / clients) eager for more interaction with you. – Isn’t that really what we all seek in business?
  • Aim to connect with editors of trade and consumer publications by submitting new product launches, company press releases, case-studies, etc. This New Year’s resolution will help your company stay in the limelight and create more brand awareness among your consumer-based customers as well as retailers, dealers and fellow trade professionals. To do this, we suggest employing a staff member to take initiative and be responsible for generating company buzz. Or, consider hiring an outside firm that specializes in publicity and marketing in your industry – Um, that would be us. As the song of the year says, “Call Me Maybe.”
  • Make plans for your company’s sales and marketing teams to strategically and regularly collaborate on building brand awareness. Often times, marketing and sales department staffers are consumed with their own goals and tasks, and can struggle to have time to work side by side. This can result in non-effective marketing and decreased sales productivity. But, by working together, this resolution will ensure your company’s new products and services are being released to the media and targeted customers in a timely and unified manner. – Ah, synergy! Gotta love it.

These New Year’s resolutions are just three among many. Our goal at ECPR is to help clients create new forms of strategic, integrated marketing in 2013 and beyond by using effective marketing tools and creative inspiration. If you are interested in learning more about Eberly & Collard Public Relations, please visit our website at www.eberlycollardpr.com. – From our team to yours, we wish all of you a prosperous and happy New Year!

Corridor X: Lightening the Load

December 18, 2012 By Don Eberly Leave a Comment

Our client, Big River Industries, specializes in manufacturing expanded clay lightweight aggregate, called Riverlite. The aggregate is used in a variety of applications, including Masonry, Concrete, Geotechnical, Asphalt, Horticulture, and Storm Water Management. The company recently teamed up with Archer-Western Contractors of Atlanta to help solve an engineering problem for its Corridor X project, a major interchange being constructed just north of Birmingham, Ala.

The problem: Portions of the new roadway will travel over an existing 2,500 foot concrete drainage system that is approximately twenty feet underground. Thus, the project’s engineers and Alabama Department of Transportation were worried too much pressure on the roadway above the pipe would cause cracks and leaks.

The Solution: Big River Industries’ Riverlite aggregate. This type of aggregate helps reduce the load on the drainage pipe culvert by more than half compared to normal weight material because of its very low density and very high angle of internal friction.

To learn more about how Big River Industries’ Riverlite aggregate provided a solution for the unique engineering challenge, watch the video below. And, for more information about Riverlite and its various applications, visit www.riverlite.com.

Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year is…

December 12, 2012 By Don Eberly 4 Comments

Drum roll please! Every year Pantone, a world-renowned authority on color and provider of color systems, announces its Color of the Year. In 2012, Pantone chose Tangerine Tango as the Color of Year; now on the opposite side of the color spectrum, the 2013 Color of the Year is Emerald.

This beautiful shade of green is fresh, luminous and energizing. It can me mixed and matched with neutral color schemes to create a striking focal point, or can be paired with bold color palettes for a dramatic effect. Designers, we guarantee your clients will want to include Pantone’s 2013 Color of the Year in their next interior design project!

Below our team has sourced two great examples on how to decorate with Emerald.

Use Emerald as a wall color in living, dining, bedroom and bathroom spaces. This creates a striking contrast when complemented with unique home furnishing pieces. (Photo Credit: Antweak)

Still Wondering if Social Media Is Worth the Effort and Cost?

November 15, 2012 By Don Eberly 4 Comments

Are you a business owner or marketing manager who is still dabbling with the idea of using social media to promote your brand, product or service? If you are, you might find an article our team here at Eberly & Collard Public Relations wrote is of interest in your pursuit of all things social networking.

Several of our social media gurus recently teamed up to share tips and ideas for one of our editor contacts on how Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest can be maximized for branding and relationship-building purposes.
As some of you may remember from several weeks ago, we shared our Twitter byline article from Greenhouse Grower magazine. Now our second part in this social media series has published on Greenhouse Grower’s website, and it includes tips on ways for businesses to improve Facebook return-on-investment (ROI).
The tips in the article apply to all businesses and trades– whether in the Horticulture, Interior Design, Architecture, Building / Construction, Furniture, or other Industries. We work in all of these fields and their sectors, and we can tell you the lessons learned in this article are relevant no matter which industry category applies to you and your work.
And, because it is the social media question everyone asks us the most, we’d like to share upfront we believe that social media ROI is not necessarily based on direct financial gain. Yes, that’s right. Having a Facebook page won’t immediately glean sales for you. Rather, the idea is built around establishing online relationships with customers. It can take some time, but by creating meaningful interactions with fans on Facebook, the result can include customer loyalty, which in turn, can equate to increased sales. It’s surely worth the effort to have the privilege of ongoing online dialog with clients, customers and those we hope will become purchasers of our products or services.
To read our full article about Facebook, click here. Also, stay tuned for our next installment in the social media series, which will focus on Pinterest.

Putting Our Clients in the Limelight and Serving as a Resource to the Media…All at the Same Time

Our very own Don Eberly and Dominique de Bruin recently teamed up to write a byline article for our client, the International Casual Furniture & Accessories Market, which is currently featured in the October issue of Casual Living, one of our favorite trade magazines dedicated to covering the casual (outdoor) furniture and accessories industry.

The International Casual Furniture & Accessories Market is the premier destination for retailers looking to find all things related to outdoor and casual living. In September, retailers, buyers and designers spent four days at the Chicago market discovering the industries’ newest, most innovative products from leading manufacturers around the world to the latest trends in color, product design, fabric patterns, and more. Part of our ECPR team was there managing the market’s public / media relations. This year’s Casual Market was a huge success and featured approximately 250 manufactures, allowing for retailers to see how a variety of trend-based products will be marketed and sold in 2013.

For industry professionals who were unable to attend, the aforesaid article, “Tuned To Trends,” highlights the emerging trends seen at this year’s market. From our team’s first-hand experience at the show and extensive interviews with exhibitors and showroom representatives, we were able to bring the best of this year’s Casual Market to the hands of readers throughout the industry.

Not every public relations firm can enable the high-level coverage that comes with securing byline articles in trade publications for clients. However, securing and writing full articles and feature stories about and for our clients is all in a day’s work for Eberly & Collard Public Relations (ECPR). The longstanding relationships we cultivate with editors leads to the ability to obtain media coverage and article content for clients, based upon the fact the editors and publishers come to think of us as experts within the field. As a result, editors rely on us to provide the latest insider information, trends and content in the Home, Garden, Design, Furniture, Building / Construction, and Architecture Industries, just to name a few.

In addition to our team’s knowledge, editors benefit from our firm’s capability to access these industries’ thought-leaders, top designers and coveted manufactures for interviews and quotes when writing byline articles. As editors develop an appreciation and dependency on our team member’s abilities to serve as contributing writers / editors, our clients become a direct beneficiary.

Ultimately, it is the professional bond ECPR continues to build with editors, that enables us to give clients a level of coverage other firms cannot achieve. For example, when we secured a byline in Casual Living, we capitalized on the opportunity to feature more than one client. In “Tuned To Trends,” our team focused on the International Casual Furniture & Accessories Market, yet still featuring Highwood USA, OW Lee, Pride Family Brands, TUCCI, and several others.

Writing byline articles for trade publications is just one service ECPR provides to clients. We also use the power of photo spreads, placed advertisements, blog posts, and social media management to enhance client’s brands. Our team is dedicated to making clients stand out among their competitors with innovative and cutting-edge strategies.

To learn more about what ECPR can do for your business or brand, please visit our website at www.eberlycollardpr.com. And, to read the byline article in mention, click the photos in this blog post to enlarge them.
