September 11, 2009 By Don Eberly Leave a Comment

Start to think about planting fall plants in the garden and packing up the beach towels because summer’s end is right around the corner. But, outdoor living can continue to be enjoyed through fall and winter, from the warmth of outdoor fireplaces or fire pits.

Learn about the design and installation of outdoor fire features stemming from an interview of David Gatti, co-owner / CEO of P.O.P.S. Landscaping, conducted by David Beaulieu, landscape editor for the popular information-based Web site About.com.

New Containers

September 10, 2009 By Don Eberly 2 Comments

By creating decorative containers featuring unique shapes and textures as part of its Daniel Planters line, Crescent Garden is providing a beautiful collection of containers that offer both breath-taking form and practical function. Headlining with exclusive Crescent Garden finishes and modern, sleek designs, the containers are perfect options for use with a wide variety of plants. Crescent Garden offers four distinct types within this particular line.

The Tall Planters make attractive indoor or outdoor décor statements in and of themselves. They are ideal for bamboo varieties, Egyptian papyrus, American arborvitae, canna, colocasia, and even sculpted English boxwood – just to name a few.

The Bowls can be used for desert-like succulent gardens or spring flower bowls. Their use ranges from impressive centerpieces that adorn large outdoor tabletops to magnificent groupings featuring diverse plant material and serving as focal points on patios.

The Hanging Planters showcase round openings leading to slanted edges and pointed bottoms in a way no other hanging planter can boast. Trailing Italian bellflowers, ‘Cora Cascade’ trailing vinca, Calibrachoa (Million bells), and the popular Ipomea batatas (Sweet Potato Vine), just to name a few, are well-suited for Crescent Garden’s Hanging Planters.

Striking, colorful bromeliads, heuchera, tiarella, begonias, and impatiens will add excitement to the company’s Round Planters. They provide near-endless choices for placement on decks, porches, verandahs, stairs, and even creatively situated directly in the garden.

One of the most stunning container selections on the market today, Crescent Garden’s Daniel Planters offer modern and chic design elements for any environment, used individually or combined in group container plantings. Crescent Garden’s line of designer planters recreates the fine detailing of hand-crafted artisan pottery. Yet, these containers are created in ultra-resistant, lightweight resin.

Color Series: September Amethyst

September 9, 2009 By Don Eberly Leave a Comment

The September 2009 issue of House Beautiful greatly inspired us at Eberly and Collard Public Relations to continue looking at color with an in-depth approach and assessing what it means for every season. We deal so often with color design and conceptualization in this field – speaking on the topic at varied events and assisting our designer and product manufacturer clients – we have decided to begin sharing our experiences with color and our thoughts on how it can help enliven interior design, outdoor living and the landscape.

Color has the ability to drastically change a room. Without touching the accessories or furniture, paint can transition the entire ambiance of a room and make everything appear new and fresh. Or, with just a few colorful accessories, a room can take on new focal points and draw the eye into undiscovered corners.

Some colors make a room feel calm and tranquil, while other colors can spice up a space with a bold blast of energy. Every person is different, as is each room and garden, and that is why color selection is so very important.

For September, we thought we would discuss one of the many colors House Beautiful touched on in its special fall color issue – amethyst. A transparent violet, amethyst is a warm, soft addition to the home inside or out. September is the perfect time to use this color in the décor, as it spruces up a space with a last-minute splash of summer color as fall begins to approach.

What does amethyst mean?

The color of amethyst is often associated with stability, peace, balance, courage, inner strength, sincerity, and calm disposition. Amethyst in design offers soothing vibes, and has been linked to tension and headache relief. People have also claimed the color can help with sleep deprivation when painted as an accent wall in bedrooms or placed on beds in the form of throw pillows.

A few ways to use Amethyst:

In the Home: One of my favorite things about this color is that it can complement existing décor items from 2009. A warm yellow was determined earlier this year as Pantone’s color of the year, and amethyst is the perfect complement. Many designers suggest placing this light purple tone near yellow throughout the house to make both colors pop. For example, one interior designer we know recently added light yellow-accented draperies to a client’s living room infused with pale purple shades. By doing so, the result was a narrow yet creative color palette.

In the Landscape: Summer heat does not mean the planting season has to end. There are several lovely amethyst flowering and foliage varieties that are perfect for the garden bed such as the very heat-tolerant Heuchera ‘Sugar Plum’ from Terra Nova Nurseries and Mazus reptans ‘Purple Mazus’ from Stepables. For the landscape designer or architect, installing purple plants enhances or balances all of the surrounding greenery, a means to use opposite sides of the color wheel to develop harmony.

Our favorite shade:

Soft Amethyst by Glidden is a fantastic shade of amethyst – bold enough to make a statement, but soft enough to not overpower the area. Glidden certainly seems to have done its trend-based homework given the inclusion of this specific color.

As color palettes range in new directions, using amethyst as an accent or focal point is setting trends in today’s interior and exterior rooms.

How have you used or plan to use amethyst in your design work this year? What other colors are you seeing set new trends in interior design and outdoor spaces?

Watch our blog and follow our tweets for more about our take on color and the ways in which industry designers and manufacturers are coloring our world.

A Few Design / Decorating Tips on Color:

August 21, 2009 By Don Eberly Leave a Comment

The use of color in interior and exterior design and decorating should demonstrate order and harmony. When the elements are unbalanced they radiate chaos, leaving an unfavorable impression.

Red – Whether positive or negative, the color red is an attention grabber. The use of red should be used sparingly in the home. It is a vibrant, powerful color. Accents are an essential aspect of interior design, the color red possesses the illusion of depth as it seems to spring these items forward.

Brown – Often paired with red for a warm, rustic texture, the color brown is frequently associated with the age or richness of the space. However, lighter shades of brown such as tan, beige, and sand offer a clean earthy feel. When used in an interior setting, brown helps other colors appear fuller and brighter, conveying a sense of wholesomeness.

White – White is one of the most widely used colors in interior design and decorating. The use of a white background offers a sharp contrast to other colors, like red curtains amongst white furniture and walls. However, white should be used carefully as it can be seen as cold.

What are some of your design techniques and / or tips regarding the use of color? We would love to hear from professionals from different industries!

IGC: STEPABLES Is At It Again

August 20, 2009 By Don Eberly Leave a Comment

A decade ago, a professional grower decided that creeping perennials needed a face (and “feet”), as they were particularly well-suited for problem areas in the landscape and areas that need to tolerate foot traffic. Thus, Fran Hopkins created the STEPABLES® brand. Now, as part of its ten year anniversary, Under A Foot Plant Company has decided to enlighten the market again with the launch of a one-of-a-kind merchandising campaign called Grab n’ Go Paks, to be sold in conjunction with the brand’s well-known 3-inch STEPABLES pot line.

I was privileged to see the new packaging first hand during the grand unveiling at this week’s IGC Show in Chicago, and, wow…I’m just floored! There are three new unique programs from which growers and IGCs can select, including:

· Tough Ten – Top 10 most robust plants in the entire STEPABLES line
· Sole Mates – Top 45 best plants for direct foot traffic usages
· Garden SOLEutions – The most diverse 40 solution plants for common
landscape applications

The paks serve to reduce retailer’s 2010 signage and POP costs, as the new packaging targets consumers with clear and concise brand messaging printed directly on the pak. When I spoke with Fran about it, the concept was made even clearer by her simple statement, “Think of it like this; instead of point-of-purchase, it is point-of-contact.” Customers don’t have to search for signs to provide essential purchasing information, and retailers no longer have pressure to search for ample signage space. Customers will have all the plant information readily available the moment they pick up the package. Not only that, retailers are now able to sell a value-added product to consumers, offering a quick solution to buying STEPABLES in bulk.

Because this is such an innovative concept, I really enjoyed standing in the STEPABLES booth today and yesterday, listening to what passers-by had to say. I was really excited to find most people were thrilled by the idea. Several retailers commented that their customers will love the colorful, handled paks. One IGC owner said, “My customers are going to like these since they are drawn to plants with innovative information. The packaging is creative and just makes gardening look like a lot of fun.”

Research has shown that consumers, especially Gen Xers and Yers, want information immediately and opt not to take extensive time to research a product or even ask questions of an employee at times. Therefore STEPABLES Grab n’ Go Paks market directly to consumers who are used to being able to look at a cereal box or shampoo bottle and find all the information regarding that product readily available at-a-glance.

Thank you everyone for stopping by the booth and for your positive feedback.

A Review from PANTS: Garden Splendor

August 12, 2009 By Don Eberly Leave a Comment

The Pennsylvania Landscape & Nursery Association’s (PLNA) annual 2009 Penn Atlantic Nursery Trade Show (PANTS) just ended last week, and we’ve heard several stories already about the show’s success once again this year.

While we were unable to attend, a client of ours, Garden Splendor®, was kind enough to pass over a few thoughts and photos from their company’s exhibit booth we thought everyone might enjoy.

This year’s Garden Splendor® 20’ by 20’ booth encompassed an outdoor room with deck and decorative wooden patio, a plethora of colorful and creative containers, and large backdrop of a memorable landscape with garden and pool. Garden Splendor® was also excited to enhance the space with a custom-designed Pent Arbor from Vixen Hill outdoor wood products.

However, the primary focus of the booth centered on the brands exciting line of fully sustainable decorative patio plants called Footprints™ an innovative line introduced last year. Because of its popularity and success over the past 12 months, Garden Splendor® wanted to provide visitors a glimpse into the expanded line with new plant offerings. Footprints™ plants are grown using sustainable practices such as compost made from renewable soil ingredients and recycled irrigation water. In addition, the plants are potted in natural-component containers and labeled with tags that are biodegradable.

Some visitor “favorites” from the display included Pentas ‘Pompom Rose’, Heuchera ‘Plum Royale’, Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureloa’, Pennisetum ‘Fireworks’, Deschampsia c. ‘Northern Lights’, and Caladium ‘Candyland’.

While PANTS opted to not award prizes this year for notable booths, Garden Splendor® was pleased to hear very positive feedback all three days of the show from visitors. Judging by the photos, they were indeed correct!

If you were able to attend the PANTS show this year, what was your favorite Garden Splendor® plant? Any other notable trends you would like to share? We’d love to hear from you!
